“Climate Change Alters Algae in Great Bear Lake”

Date:

A recent study suggests that the algae population in Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories has undergone significant changes over the past few decades due to climate change. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, links the restructuring of the algal community in large northern lakes like Great Bear to the increasing number of ice-free days and rising air temperatures.

According to John Smol, a biology professor at Queen’s University and co-director of the Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab (PEARL), the altered algae composition may have varying impacts on the lake’s ecosystem, with some species benefiting while others may suffer. Research conducted on sediment core samples from Great Bear Lake revealed a shift in algae species from those commonly found in ice-covered lakes to those thriving in open water environments.

Comparative analysis with studies on Lake Hazen and Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories further supported the findings. Smol noted the surprising rate of change in all three lakes, considering their immense size. Despite the study’s implications, some experts like Reid Stoyberg, an environmental scientist and fishing guide at Plummer’s Arctic Lodges, highlight the need for more data before drawing definitive conclusions on the lake’s ecological health.

Stoyberg emphasized the importance of continued research to monitor the impact of these changes on various species in Great Bear Lake, stressing the necessity for adaptation in the face of environmental shifts. The study’s findings warrant further investigation to better understand the long-term consequences of these ecosystem transformations.
