“Belugas from Marineland in Canada set for European and U.S. aquarium homes”

Date:

Europe’s largest aquarium is set to become a potential new home for some of the 30 belugas currently residing at Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada has approved a rescue plan that will involve relocating all remaining whales to either Oceanogràfic València in Spain or four different locations in the United States: Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, and two SeaWorld facilities in San Diego, California, and San Antonio, Texas.

Following the denial of Marineland’s request to export the belugas to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China last fall, the whales have faced the looming threat of euthanasia. The theme park and zoo shut its doors to the public in 2024 after the passing of owners John Holer and Marie Holer, but dedicated staff have continued to care for the remaining animals.

According to Johnny Ford, a vice president at Shedd Aquarium, there is no specific timeline for the rescue operation, but all accredited aquariums involved are ready to mobilize within weeks. Despite this readiness, certain hurdles remain, including required medical examinations by Canadian veterinarians to ensure the whales are fit for travel and obtaining necessary import permits from the U.S. and Spanish governments.

Final approval from the Canadian government in the form of export permits is also crucial for the transfer process. This approval will be granted closer to the transport date pending the completion of final animal health checks, as stated by Erik Nosaluk from the Office of the Minister of Fisheries. The department is collaborating with Canada Border Services Agency and Health Canada to ensure a smooth and safe transfer process.

Oceanogràfic València, which successfully rescued two belugas from Ukraine in 2024 amidst a warzone, has played a key role in the Marineland case due to its experience in cross-border beluga relocations. The previous rescue operation involved collaboration between Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld, and Oceanogràfic València, showcasing the expertise of the collective in transporting belugas over long distances.

Overall, the rescue logistics for the belugas at Marineland are being meticulously planned by experienced professionals, ensuring a safe and successful relocation process similar to past operations.
