A newly released documentary sheds light on the inception of the Northern Super League, just in time for the league’s inaugural post-season. “The Pitch,” directed by Michele Hozer, delves into the creation of the women’s professional league led by co-founders Diana Matheson and Thomas Gilbert, who transitioned their Project 8 vision into reality with the launch of a six-team league earlier this year.
The documentary captures the uncertainties and challenges faced by Matheson and Gilbert during the league’s development. Matheson expressed frustration over the prolonged period of ambiguity, stating, “Tom and I have been living in a lot of uncertainty for the last 15 months, 16 months.” The film also showcases Matheson’s relentless dedication, with scenes of her tirelessly working on her laptop while on the move, supported by her wife Anastasia Bucsis.
Despite the obstacles, the documentary portrays a successful league launch, highlighting Matheson’s determination, Bucsis’ unwavering support, and Gilbert’s rational approach. Matheson revealed that they were keen on documenting the league’s creation and enlisted Hozer for the project through a connection with Nathalie Cook, an early advisor to Project 8.
Hozer, known for her acclaimed works such as “Shake Hands with The Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire” and “Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould,” faced her own challenges in securing financing for the documentary. Reflecting on the journey, Matheson remarked on the emotional experience of watching the film, appreciating the preservation of the past few years’ struggles and successes.
The documentary also features poignant interviews with former players like Amy Walsh, shedding light on issues such as motherhood impacting playing careers. Walsh and teammate Martina Franko’s experiences with Canada Soccer’s policies regarding motherhood expenses at camps are highlighted, prompting discussions on basic rights and gender equality in sports.
The film addresses criticisms towards Canada Soccer, particularly regarding restrictive marketing deals and past decisions. Despite past regrets, current Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue is commended for his efforts to drive positive change within the organization. The documentary captures the journey of the league’s formation, showcasing the perseverance and vision of its founders amidst challenges in securing team buy-ins and launching the league.
