Ontario’s Premier, Doug Ford, expressed his determination to persuade Stellantis to honor its commitment to workers by maintaining the Brampton assembly plant operational, following the automaker’s decision to shift Jeep production to the United States. Ford, disappointed by this development, highlighted the $13 billion U.S. expansion plan announced by Stellantis, emphasizing the vitality of Ontario as an auto manufacturing hub.
Ford pledged unwavering support to keep the Brampton plant running, emphasizing Ontario’s capability to produce top-quality vehicles globally. Additionally, the federal government, represented by Industry Minister Melanie Joly, warned Stellantis of potential legal action in response to the company’s decision.
Furthermore, concerns were raised regarding provincial funding for the plant, with Ford clarifying that no funds had been disbursed to Stellantis for the Brampton project. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed dismay over the setback, citing significant investments made in 2022 by both the province and the federal government to enhance Stellantis facilities in Windsor and Brampton.
Prime Minister Mark Carney attributed the shift in production to U.S. tariffs and assured collaboration with Stellantis to create new opportunities in the Brampton area. The mayor of Brampton echoed concerns over tariffs and urged the federal government to take action. Stellantis indicated ongoing discussions with the Canadian government regarding the future of the Brampton facility.
Amidst the turmoil, Unifor’s national president, Lana Payne, urged the federal government to safeguard Canadian auto jobs and prioritize the preservation of the Brampton Assembly. Stellantis had previously halted preparations for Jeep Compass production in Brampton due to tariff threats, impacting around 3,000 employees at the plant.
Despite the challenges, Stellantis highlighted its commitment to Canada, including plans to add a third shift to the Windsor Assembly Plant. The company remains engaged in discussions with the government regarding the Brampton facility’s future.
