“B.C. Transplant Urges More Organ Donor Registrations”

Date:

B.C. Transplant is urging more residents of British Columbia to consider registering as organ donors following a milestone year in 2025, during which 575 individuals in the province underwent life-altering transplant surgeries. Since conducting its first kidney transplant in 1968, B.C. Transplant has been responsible for managing organ donations and transplants throughout the region.

According to B.C. Transplant, the successful surgeries were made feasible by the generosity of 232 donors, comprising 146 deceased individuals and 86 living donors who contributed organs for procedures like kidney and liver transplants. Dr. Sean Keenan, the provincial medical director of donation services, acknowledged the tragedy of each deceased donor while commending their families for their remarkable willingness to consider donation.

Dr. Keenan noted that the increased number of surgeries in the previous year was not attributed to any specific cause but rather to the ability of the donors to provide more organs. Additionally, organ transfers between provinces played a role in meeting the needs of patients. He emphasized the collaborative effort and dedication of all involved, underscoring the annual variations in transplant numbers.

Dr. Keenan highlighted the rarity of individuals becoming donors, as it typically necessitates being on life support, with many potential donors not having formally registered their decision. Registering as a donor, he emphasized, is open to everyone regardless of their health status, as stringent tests are conducted to ensure the safety of organs for transplantation, offering hope to those awaiting life-saving procedures.

Troy Chapman, a resident of Kelowna, B.C., vividly recalls the life-changing moment on October 4, 2025, when he received a call confirming his long-awaited kidney transplant. Chapman, who had been on the waitlist since May due to complications from diabetes, expressed his disbelief and gratitude upon realizing that the surgery was imminent, ultimately restoring his health and vitality.

Debbie Wargovcsik shared the touching story of her son Beau, who made the selfless decision to become an organ donor at the age of 23. Following a tragic event that led to Beau being in a coma, his parents honored his wish to donate his organs, emphasizing the profound impact of his altruistic gesture.

Both Chapman and Wargovcsik’s experiences underscore the transformative power of organ donation, exemplifying the profound impact it can have on individuals and their families.

By encouraging more individuals to register as donors, B.C. Transplant aims to continue facilitating life-saving transplants and fostering a culture of generosity and compassion within the community.
