After a decade since their final performance, The Tragically Hip plans to revisit the 2016 broadcast of their last Man Machine Poem concert through a special airing on CBC this summer. Fans will have the opportunity to tune in to The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration concert on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. local time on various CBC platforms including CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio, and CBC Music’s YouTube channel.
The original concert was held in Kingston, Ont., on Aug. 20, 2016, and was broadcasted on CBC, attracting 11.7 million viewers. This concert marked the band’s final tour before the passing of lead singer Gord Downie, who succumbed to brain cancer on Oct. 17, 2017.
In honor of this significant event, The Tragically Hip will be releasing a new live album on Aug. 21, one day before the broadcast. Titled The Tragically Hip: Live July 22 – August 20, 2016, the album was meticulously mixed and mastered by the band’s seasoned audio engineer, Mark Vreeken. Fans can expect live renditions of beloved tracks such as Ahead By a Century and New Orleans is Sinking from their final nationwide tour.
Already available are the live versions of Fifty-Mission Cap recorded in Edmonton and Locked In The Trunk Of A Car from the last Kingston performance. Additionally, the band is gearing up for their induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in September at Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall.
