“Prince Edward Island Hoops Star Makes NCAA History”

Date:

A high school basketball player from Prince Edward Island is set to elevate her game and athletic career as she prepares to attend university next year.

Alex Newson recently made the decision to enroll at the State University of New York at Albany, where she will be a member of the Albany Great Danes basketball team. When she takes the court with the team, Newson will be creating history as the first-ever basketball player from Prince Edward Island to compete in NCAA Division I basketball.

Expressing her excitement, Newson stated, “It’s great, honestly. I think it’s even more special coming from a small province. I hope to inspire other individuals, especially girls who play basketball. I believe the sport is gaining popularity in the province.”

Newson’s basketball journey began at the age of five. Before joining the Albany Great Danes, she made a significant move to Ontario for her junior year at King’s Christian Collegiate to have the opportunity to play basketball year-round in a top-tier league.

Reflecting on her experience, Newson shared, “We compete against exceptional Division I and national team players, and we frequently travel to the United States for exposure and recruitment.”

After witnessing her progress and potential in Ontario, Newson realized that she could aim higher and turn her dream of advancing her basketball career into a reality.

Earlier this year, Newson proudly represented Team Prince Edward Island as the province’s flag bearer at the Canada Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, where she showcased her skills on the basketball court.

Acknowledging the unwavering support from her parents, Newson emphasized, “They have always backed me. My mom accompanied me on the visit to Albany, and she was impressed by the coaching staff and felt it was the right fit for me.”

Looking ahead to her future at the University at Albany, Newson expressed her eagerness to not only play basketball but also pursue studies in biology starting next fall.

For Newson, committing to the University at Albany signifies a significant milestone and a rare opportunity to compete in NCAA basketball, particularly as a Canadian athlete.

As she prepares to join the team as a freshman, Newson is determined to make a positive impact, contribute to wins, and enhance her skills. While she remains open to various possibilities for her basketball career, including the prospect of turning professional with the guidance of her coaches, Newson is focused on completing her senior year before beginning basketball training at the University at Albany next summer.
