“Principal in Manitoba Sues Parent Over Library Book Controversy”

Date:

A principal in southern Manitoba is taking legal action against a parent who tried to remove books from school libraries. The principal, Mary Reimer, alleges that the parent, Raelyn Fox, made defamatory social media posts insinuating that the principal endorsed the sharing of child pornography. Reimer is seeking damages and an injunction to prevent Fox from spreading false statements suggesting she promoted inappropriate materials to students or engaged in sexual exploitation.

Fox initiated a petition in 2023 urging the Prairie Rose School Division to restrict access to certain books in school libraries, claiming they were sexually explicit. Reimer refutes Fox’s claims, stating that the books in question were either not available to students or were restricted to mature audiences, and that Fox was aware of this information. Despite this, Fox continues to assert on social media that these books are easily accessible at the school library.

Reimer expressed concerns that Fox’s social media posts could incite hostility and potentially lead to violence within the community. Additionally, Reimer is requesting that Fox delete defamatory posts, including one where Fox falsely attributed a statement to the principal advocating for the availability of pornographic content to students.

The Canadian Library Challenges Database reported that the controversy at Prairie Rose revolved around 20 titles, including sex education and 2SLGBTQ+ content. Activists have increasingly targeted schools, with groups like Concerned Citizens Canada and Action4Canada advocating for book removals in various school divisions across Manitoba.

Despite the ongoing legal dispute, Fox has refrained from commenting directly. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about the potential removal of books due to pressure from advocacy groups, which could lead to a lack of transparency and oversight within school libraries. Both Reimer and the Prairie Rose School Division have chosen not to provide comments on the matter.
