Britney Spears, represented by her lawyer, pleaded guilty on Monday to a reduced charge to avoid jail time in a case where she was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs in Southern California. The 44-year-old singer did not personally attend the court session in Ventura County. However, her lawyer, Michael A. Goldstein, accepted the plea deal known as a “wet reckless” on her behalf. This agreement entails a year of probation, participation in a mandatory DUI class, and payment of state-imposed fines.
The plea deal was deemed standard for individuals without a history of DUI offenses, no involvement in accidents or injuries while driving, and with a low blood alcohol level, as per the district attorney’s office. It is a common resolution for those who demonstrate a willingness to address their issues and seek help, which Spears did by voluntarily entering a substance abuse treatment facility in April.
Following the hearing, Goldstein expressed that while nobody is pleased about pleading guilty, in this case, it was necessary to move forward. He acknowledged the district attorney’s recognition of Spears’ efforts to improve her situation. Goldstein clarified that Spears completed her rehabilitation program and refuted claims that she left prematurely. When questioned about her future plans, he responded, “I am uncertain, but likely a lot.”
During the court proceedings, Spears was placed on summary probation, which does not involve mandatory meetings with a parole officer. She agreed to temporarily waive her Fourth Amendment rights regarding search and seizure if stopped by law enforcement, meaning she must comply with searches and sobriety tests. The judge exempted her home from this requirement at Goldstein’s request.
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko commended Spears for taking responsibility for her actions. He emphasized the seriousness of DUI offenses and stressed the importance of complying with the court-ordered obligations, including ongoing substance abuse treatment, regular therapy sessions, and monthly psychiatric consultations.
Spears faced a single misdemeanor DUI charge last Thursday, which did not necessitate her presence in court for the arraignment. Despite previous comments from her representatives, it was unclear whether she would attend the hearing, which attracted significant media attention to Ventura, where the incident occurred.
The singer’s residence is near the location of her arrest on March 4. At that time, her representatives condemned her actions as unacceptable and expressed hope that the arrest would prompt positive changes in her life. Since being charged, neither Spears nor her representatives have issued any statements.
Spears was stopped by the California Highway Patrol for driving recklessly in her black BMW on U.S. 101. Following field sobriety tests, she was arrested and taken into custody. Authorities confirmed the presence of alcohol and drugs in her system, although specific substances and her blood alcohol content were not disclosed.
