Canada and India Forge New Partnership Agreement

Date:

Canada and India have agreed on a set of measures to enhance their bilateral relations, marking a significant development two years after a diplomatic strain caused by the killing of a Canadian Sikh leader on Canadian soil. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi, culminating in a new roadmap for Canada-India relations. The joint release emphasized the importance of a robust India-Canada relationship amid global economic uncertainties and escalating geopolitical tensions. The agreement includes plans for ministerial-level talks on trade, investment, cooperation in agriculture, science, technology, civil nuclear collaboration, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and energy. Both nations expressed their commitment to revitalizing their partnership to bolster economic cooperation, ensure stable supply chains, and reinforce strategic stability in the complex international landscape.

The recent partnership agreement signifies a step towards thawing the frosty relationship that originated from former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s accusations against the Indian government regarding the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent figure in the Khalistan movement advocating for an independent Sikh state in India. Despite India refuting Canada’s claims, the accusations led to the expulsion of diplomats from both countries. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration has been actively working to mend ties with India, appointing new envoys for both countries. Carney highlighted the appointment as a crucial initial step during his meeting with Modi at the G7 summit in Alberta, emphasizing the significance of respecting each other’s sovereignty throughout the process. The discussions between the two countries have also touched on issues like transnational crime, security, and adherence to the rules-based order. Additionally, Canada and India are collaborating in law enforcement efforts, as confirmed by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, who highlighted ongoing dialogues in this regard. However, Carney’s approach towards India has faced criticism from the Sikh community, with the World Sikh Organization of Canada expressing concerns over the lack of assurances in the joint statement regarding curbing foreign interference and transnational repression. The organization emphasized the need for defending Canada’s sovereignty and upholding the rule of law without compromising on diplomatic principles.
