Nedra Talley Ross, the final remaining member of the 1960s iconic group the Ronettes, known for hits like “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You,” and “Walking in the Rain,” has passed away at the age of 80. Her daughter, Nedra K. Ross, confirmed her death at their residence. The official Instagram account of the Ronettes also acknowledged her passing, stating that Nedra’s unique voice and style played a significant role in shaping the group’s timeless music.
With the help of Phil Spector’s production, the Ronettes, with their captivating appearance and powerful vocals, rose to fame in the girl-group era. They even toured alongside the Rolling Stones in England and formed friendships with the Beatles. During her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame acceptance speech in 2007, Ross reflected on the highs and lows of show business, expressing gratitude for the support of her family during their exciting yet challenging journey.
Born and raised in New York City, Ross, along with her sisters Veronica “Ronnie” and Estelle Bennett, released their debut album, “Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes, Featuring Veronica,” in 1964. The album produced several chart-topping tracks and earned a spot in Rolling Stone’s prestigious list of the 500 greatest albums. Their rendition of “Sleigh Ride” on Spector’s “A Christmas Gift for You” album also gained recognition and was featured in various films and soundtracks.
The Ronettes’ musical voyage began in March 1963 when they caught the attention of Phil Spector, leading to their signing with Philles Records. Despite their eventual split in 1967, their legacy endured through hits like “Be My Baby” and “Baby I Love You,” which found a place in numerous films and TV shows. Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones praised the Ronettes’ talent during their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, reminiscing about their exceptional performances.
Following the group’s disbandment, Ross shifted her focus to Christian music and released the album “Full Circle” in 1978. She was married to DJ and television personality Scott Ross until his passing in 2023. Despite a prolonged legal battle with Spector over royalties, the Ronettes’ quest for compensation was unsuccessful. Ross is survived by four children, while Ronnie Spector passed away in 2022 and Estelle Bennett in 2009.
