A tragic incident unfolded at a well-known nightclub in Goa, India, claiming the lives of 25 individuals, including tourists, as confirmed by the state’s chief minister on Sunday. The fire broke out shortly after midnight in Arpora village, situated in North Goa, a bustling party destination about 25 kilometers from Panaji, the state capital.
Most of the casualties were identified as kitchen staff of the club, with a few tourists also among the deceased. Six individuals sustained injuries but are now in stable condition, as mentioned by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. All the victims have been accounted for, and the fire, originating from a gas cylinder explosion, has been successfully extinguished, according to the Press Trust of India.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the blaze initiated on the club’s first floor, where approximately 100 tourists were present on the dance floor. Amid the chaos, many sought refuge in the kitchen downstairs, leading to several individuals, both patrons, and staff, becoming trapped.
The nightclub, positioned along the Arpora River backwaters, presented challenges to firefighters due to its limited entry and exit points, compelling them to park their vehicles around 400 meters away, causing delays in containment efforts.
Chief Minister Sawant disclosed that the club had flouted fire safety regulations, prompting the state government to launch an investigation to ascertain the fire’s exact cause and hold those responsible accountable. Notably, the club had received a demolition notice previously for lacking a construction permit, which was later rescinded by higher authorities.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, assuring full government support to the affected families. Tragic accidents like this underscore the imperative for stringent safety measures to prevent such incidents, as highlighted by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who called for a thorough inquiry to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Global Affairs Canada extended condolences, stating no Canadian citizens were reportedly affected by the fire. Following the incident, Indian authorities initiated an investigation and pledged compensation to the victims and their families. Goa, a renowned tourist hotspot, attracted millions of visitors, both domestic and international, in the preceding year, showcasing its appeal as a coastal destination with picturesque beaches.
