“Yves Veggie Cuisine Makes Comeback with Maple Leaf Foods”

Date:

Plant-based meat substitute brand Yves Veggie Cuisine is staging a comeback as Maple Leaf Foods Inc. announces the relaunch of five Yves products, including veggie deli slices and original and Mexican veggie ground round. According to Maple Leaf spokesperson Victoria Berry, this reintroduction demonstrates the company’s confidence in the plant-based product category. While the specific launch date remains unspecified, consumers can anticipate seeing these products back on shelves this summer.

Although Maple Leaf did not disclose the exact date of the acquisition, records from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office indicate that some Yves trademarks were transferred to Maple Leaf in December and January, with additional filings made in February. Previously owned by Hain Celestial Group, Yves Veggie Cuisine ceased operations last September after a 40-year history due to a slowdown in demand for meat alternatives.

Jo-Ann McArthur, president of Nourish Food Marketing, noted that Maple Leaf aims to leverage the nostalgic appeal of the Yves brand, renowned for its plant-based alternatives mimicking ham, turkey, and burger patties. Yves’ reemergence complements Maple Leaf’s existing plant-based portfolio, which includes LightLife and Field Roast, aligning with the growing consumer interest in plant-based options.

However, McArthur highlighted the shifting consumer preference towards simpler and natural ingredients like tempeh over highly processed foods, raising questions about Yves’ performance in this evolving market landscape. A 2024 report by Circana revealed that meat alternative sales in the U.S. reached $1.3 billion in 2020 before experiencing a decline.

In conclusion, Maple Leaf’s decision to revive the Yves Veggie Cuisine brand reflects the ongoing evolution of the plant-based food industry and the company’s strategic alignment with changing consumer preferences.
