A painting at a German museum has drawn a sudden influx of Taylor Swift enthusiasts due to its striking similarity to the opening scene of Swift’s latest chart-topping music video, “The Fate of Ophelia.”
Hundreds of additional patrons flocked to the Hessische Landesmuseum in Wiesbaden, central Germany, over the weekend to marvel at the artwork. One family even traveled from Hamburg, while numerous American families from a nearby U.S. army base also joined in.
The museum visitors, known as Swifties, sought to see an Art Nouveau painting by Friedrich Heyser portraying Ophelia, the character from Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet.”
In Heyser’s oil-on-canvas piece, Ophelia is depicted in white attire amidst a backdrop of white water lilies, believed to have been created around 1900.
The opening scene of Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia” music video mirrors Heyser’s work, transforming Swift into a living interpretation of the painting. Museum director Andreas Henning noted the resemblance, which led the museum to organize a special tour for Swift fans, garnering widespread online attention.
Excited by the interest, museum spokesperson Hirschmann announced that fans dressed as either Swift or Ophelia could attend the tour for free on November 2. Henning expressed a desire to show the original painting to Taylor Swift, emphasizing the opportunity to attract new visitors to the museum.
While the museum cannot confirm if Swift directly drew inspiration from the artwork for her song, “The Fate of Ophelia” continues to dominate the music charts in both Germany and the United States.
