Stellantis is reportedly considering the closure and potential sale of the Brampton Assembly Plant, according to a national union. Unifor’s national president, Lana Payne, stated that the union received information from Stellantis about these plans earlier in the week. However, the company has not officially notified the union in writing, as required by the collective agreement, which mandates a minimum one-year notice for closures or sales.
Payne expressed disappointment, emphasizing the impact on union members who have dedicated themselves to the plant. Stellantis, in response, stated that they are gearing up for collective bargaining and have not made any official announcements yet. The company emphasized its commitment to finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for the Brampton Assembly.
The plant was in the process of being retooled for Jeep Compass production, which started in January 2024 but was halted in February 2025. Subsequently, in October 2025, Stellantis informed the union of its decision to relocate Jeep Compass production from Brampton to the U.S., potentially putting the plant on indefinite hold.
Unifor plans to address this issue in upcoming negotiations with Stellantis, asserting that the loss of high-paying union jobs with a long-standing auto sector agreement is irreplaceable. The union also intends to advocate for government policies to safeguard Canada’s auto manufacturing sector.
Vito Beato, president of Unifor Local 1285, vowed to fight to protect jobs at the Brampton plant, highlighting the importance of these positions. He remains optimistic about the future of the plant and looks forward to discussions during bargaining sessions. Unifor Local 1285 represents approximately 2,200 members at the Brampton facility who are currently receiving income support while operations are paused.
Local authorities and government representatives have expressed support for the workers and are actively engaged in discussions to maintain automotive production in Brampton and secure long-term investments in Canada. The City of Brampton has taken measures to safeguard automotive manufacturing at the site, demonstrating a commitment to preserving jobs and the local economy.
