“Rush Returns: Tour & New Drummer for 2026”

Date:

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson revealed through a social media update on Monday that they have been practicing approximately 35 songs in preparation for the upcoming Rush tour next year. The scheduled tour dates from June to September 2026 cover various locations in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, including two shows in Toronto in August.

Rush’s final live performance took place in Los Angeles in 2015. Following the passing of esteemed drummer Neil Peart at the age of 67 on January 7, 2020, due to glioblastoma, any speculation about a reunion was extinguished. Anika Nilles, a talented German drummer with a background in solo albums and touring with guitar icon Jeff Beck, will be joining the band as the new drummer.

Acknowledging the challenge of filling the void left by Peart, Geddy Lee expressed optimism about the chemistry felt during rehearsals with Nilles, revitalizing their classic songs. Lifeson emphasized that each show will pay tribute to Peart, ensuring his legacy is celebrated nightly. Despite the loss, Lee and Lifeson continued to perform together occasionally, including tribute performances for Gordon Lightfoot and Taylor Hawkins.

Both Lee and Lifeson, who are renowned Canadian musicians, have been engaged in individual projects. Lee published his autobiography in 2023, while Lifeson collaborated on two albums with Envy of None. They hinted at the possibility of adding a fourth member, likely a keyboardist, for the upcoming tour, deviating from their traditional power trio setup.

The lifelong friends, who first met in junior high in North York, Ont., reminisced about their shared journey, highlighting the challenges faced during live performances. Their musical bond, rooted in influences like Cream and The Who, led to the formation of Rush in the early 1970s. With Peart’s lyrical prowess and drumming skills, Rush achieved significant success, earning accolades at the Juno Awards and becoming a prominent headlining act worldwide.

Despite uncertainties in the late 1990s, Rush persevered through personal tragedies and continued to captivate audiences until their hiatus in 2015. Lee’s initial resentment towards Peart’s decision to step back was revealed in his memoir, while Lifeson had previously stated that there were no plans for future tours. Recognized for their musical contributions, Rush stands as the second Canadian group to be honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, alongside a string of prestigious awards and inductions.
