President Vladimir Putin stated in an interview released on Thursday that Russia is prepared to forcibly take control of Ukraine’s Donbas region if Ukrainian forces do not withdraw, a proposition rejected by Kyiv. This follows the deployment of tens of thousands of Russian troops into Ukraine in February 2022 after years of conflict between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Putin emphasized the ultimatum, saying, “Either we reclaim these territories by military force, or Ukrainian troops vacate these areas.” However, Ukraine has firmly opposed the idea of ceding its territory to Russia, especially considering Moscow’s inability to secure these regions through armed conflict.
Despite Russia currently holding nearly 20% of Ukraine, including Crimea and significant portions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, discussions with the United States regarding a potential peace agreement have been ongoing. Russia’s stance has been consistent in seeking complete control over Donbas and expecting informal recognition of this control from the United States.
In a move denounced by the West and Kyiv as illegitimate, Russia declared in 2022 that Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia are now part of its territory following referendums. However, most countries continue to recognize these regions, along with Crimea, as integral parts of Ukraine.
Recent talks between Russia and the U.S., represented by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have been deemed productive by Putin, who highlighted the importance of continued dialogue. While some proposals have been accepted, certain points remain contentious, underscoring the complexity of the negotiation process.
Tragic incidents continue to unfold in Ukraine, with reports of civilian casualties due to Russian attacks. Recent strikes in Kryvyi Rih and Kherson have resulted in injuries and fatalities, including the death of a six-year-old girl. Moreover, critical infrastructure, such as energy facilities, has been targeted, leaving thousands without essential services as winter approaches.
As the conflict persists, global attention remains focused on finding a peaceful resolution. Turkey, a key player with ties to both Kyiv and Moscow, has called for the preservation of energy infrastructure amid the ongoing hostilities. Meanwhile, incidents of violence persist, exemplified by a drone strike in the Russia-occupied Kherson region, further underscoring the humanitarian toll of the conflict.
