Netflix has officially announced the development of a sequel to the highly popular film “KPop Demon Hunters,” which holds the title of being the most-watched film on the streaming platform. The upcoming installment will continue the creative partnership between Netflix and co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, marking the first project under their new exclusive multi-year agreement for animation.
Maggie Kang, a Korean filmmaker who hails from Toronto, expressed her pride in the audience’s desire for more of the Korean story and characters. The original musical film, animated by Sony Pictures Animation, follows the K-pop girl trio Huntrix as they navigate their dual lives as superstars and demon hunters. The movie’s standout song, “Golden,” performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“KPop Demon Hunters” received critical acclaim and numerous awards, including recognition at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. The film has garnered two Oscar nominations for best animated feature and best original song. Additionally, “Golden” secured a Grammy award for best song written for visual media, marking a historic win for K-Pop music.
Netflix reported record-breaking viewership numbers for the film, with over 482 million views and 32 million views for its lyric videos within a six-month period. The movie’s soundtrack continues to resonate with global audiences.
Looking ahead to the sequel, Chris Appelhans emphasized the importance of having a clear creative vision from the outset to ensure a meaningful and impactful continuation of the story.
