Police are looking into a break-in at a residence on Friday, believed to be owned by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The incident occurred while the NBA’s current MVP was playing in a game the previous night. Authorities in Nichols Hills, situated north of downtown Oklahoma City, are handling the investigation. They have refrained from disclosing the resident’s identity or detailing the stolen items.
Gilgeous-Alexander, a native of Hamilton, Ont., was not present at the property when officers responded to the burglary report around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, coinciding with the Thunder’s match against the Washington Wizards. Local media captured images of law enforcement at the scene. The suspects had fled before the police arrived, and although no arrests have been made, the public is not considered at risk.
This break-in is part of a series of similar incidents targeting prominent athletes’ homes in the U.S. in recent times. Professional players like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow, Luka Doncic, and Evgeni Malkin have also fallen victim to such crimes. Law enforcement has cautioned sports organizations about thieves exploiting game days to target empty homes, often entering through back windows.
In response to these threats, the NBA issued a memo to teams in November 2024, advising enhanced home security measures. The league recommended players to install advanced alarm systems with cameras, store valuables in secure safes, remove online home listings revealing interior details, utilize guard services during extended absences, and enlist dogs for added protection.
