Mother Honors Late Daughter at Graduation Ceremony

Date:

Susan Petley felt a rush of emotions as she made her way across the stage during the graduation ceremony at St. Michael’s Adult Catholic High School in Windsor, Ontario. This was a moment she had longed for, but it was bittersweet. Petley expressed a mix of hurt, anger, and love that brought her to tears and garnered a heartfelt ovation in the packed gymnasium.

Standing in for her late daughter, Bethany Anne Coupe, who had passed away from cancer in April, Petley accepted the high school diploma with her other daughter, Cynthia, by her side. Despite her immense pride, Petley couldn’t help but feel the pain of Bethany’s absence on such a significant occasion.

Bethany, aged 35, had faced ongoing health challenges that hindered her academic progress. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given a bleak prognosis, she persevered by studying from her hospital bed with the support of the school’s staff. Initially, Petley struggled to comprehend Bethany’s unwavering dedication but eventually realized that her daughter’s motivation stemmed from a desire to make her mother proud.

Bethany’s ultimate goal was to enter St. Clair College and pursue a career focused on helping children or animals. Meanwhile, in the audience, six siblings, originally from Sudan and Eritrea, eagerly awaited their turn to receive their diplomas together, marking a significant milestone for the family.

Reflecting on the night filled with mixed emotions, Petley emphasized the importance of determination in achieving one’s aspirations, drawing inspiration from her daughter’s unwavering resolve. She encouraged others to persevere in the face of adversity and hold onto their dreams, just as Bethany had demonstrated.

The graduation ceremony at St. Michael’s Adult Catholic High School celebrated not only academic achievements but also resilience, hope, and the pursuit of meaningful goals, leaving a lasting impact on both graduates and attendees.
