Microsoft and Asus Unveil Xbox ROG Ally Handhelds

Date:

Months following the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, Microsoft is introducing two new handheld gaming devices: the Xbox ROG Ally and its more powerful counterpart, the Xbox ROG Ally X. These portables, created through a collaboration between Microsoft and Asus, resemble PC handhelds like the Steam Deck, offering a broader range of games and customization options but also presenting more complexity.

While these devices boast impressive computing capabilities, their launch coincides with rising subscription costs and game cancellations within the Xbox community due to recent company-wide layoffs at Microsoft. The Xbox ROG Ally is priced at $799, $100 more than the Switch 2, while the Xbox ROG Ally X comes at $1,299, offering enhanced specifications such as a more robust processor, increased memory, and double the storage capacity compared to the Ally.

Unlike the traditional Xbox Series console, the Xbox ROG Ally functions as a miniaturized PC running on Windows 11, optimized for the Xbox PC storefront. While it allows access to a wide array of games, including those from other digital stores like Epic Games and Steam, it relies on Microsoft’s cloud streaming service for exclusive Xbox console games. The devices feature a new “full screen” mode, prioritizing gaming over the standard Windows desktop experience.

The Xbox ROG Ally impresses with its vibrant screen, powerful speakers, and familiar Xbox controller layout, providing a comfortable gaming experience. However, its bulkier design compared to the Switch 2 may limit portability, although it remains relatively lightweight for extended gaming sessions. Microsoft touts the Ally’s capability to deliver seamless PC gaming for casual players and enthusiasts alike.

Game performance on the Xbox ROG Ally varies, with titles like Forza Horizon 5 and Fortnite running smoothly, albeit with longer startup times. While indie games perform well, more demanding 3D games may struggle due to hardware limitations. The Xbox ROG Ally X model, according to reviews, handles newer games like Avowed at stable frame rates, appealing to enthusiastic and discerning consumers.

As the gaming market evolves, with younger players favoring mobile platforms, the Xbox ROG Ally targets a niche demographic of tech-savvy and affluent gamers. Despite its premium features, the device offers a distinct gaming experience, potentially carving out a space within the enthusiast gaming community.
