“Mathematician’s Innovative Dice Ensure Fair Game Start”

Date:

In 2012, during a conversation at a gaming convention, a board game designer challenged mathematician Eric Harshbarger to create dice that could determine the starting player without the possibility of a tie. The goal was to expedite the game setup process and allow players to begin playing quickly.

Harshbarger, a mathematician and senior lecturer at Auburn University in Alabama, found the problem intriguing as it lacked an obvious solution. After years of collaboration with computer scientists and mathematicians worldwide, Harshbarger and his team developed a set of dice that could determine the starting player for up to five players with a guaranteed winner from a single roll.

While the concept was theoretically sound, the challenge lay in creating physical dice that could be manufactured and rolled effectively. After various iterations and reductions in the number of sides, a breakthrough came when a researcher from Australia proposed using five 120-sided dice, which was later refined to five 60-sided dice by a Canadian software engineer.

Despite initial skepticism from some researchers about the practicality of the dice, Harshbarger asserts that the mathematical principles behind them ensure fairness. Ongoing research aims to explore the feasibility of using fewer sides for a five-player set and potentially expanding the concept to accommodate six players.

The unpredictability and complexity of the problem have kept researchers like Harshbarger engaged, highlighting the allure of tackling challenging mathematical questions that may not have immediate solutions.
