Lilly Singh Receives Honorary Doctorate from Alma Mater

Date:

YouTuber-turned-television host Lilly Singh has been awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by York University, her alma mater. The recognition was given for her significant contributions to community development and achievements in pop culture and entertainment in Toronto.

Singh humorously mentioned that adding “PhD” to her name might become her new identity, joking that it could even end up on her car wrap or as her next tattoo. She shared her excitement about the honor, revealing plans to celebrate by dedicating a day to self-care, spending time with her doctorate, and penning a letter to her younger self.

During her convocation address, Singh reminisced about her earlier graduation in 2010 when she obtained a degree in psychology. She humorously recalled wearing a T-shirt with an “S” representing her YouTube persona, Superwoman, under her graduation gown.

The 37-year-old gained fame through her comedic content on YouTube, amassing a large following and transitioning to mainstream media. She hosted the late-night show “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” in 2019 and the game show “Battle of the Generations” on CTV starting in 2023. Additionally, Singh has ventured into the film industry, featuring in animated movies like “The Bad Guys” and producing the sex-ed comedy “Doin’ It.”

Singh, who currently resides in Los Angeles, reflected on the complexities of potential moves back to Canada due to the strained relations between the two countries. She emphasized the importance of following one’s purpose and serving where meant to be, indicating her openness to adapt and navigate challenges. Singh also highlighted concerns her parents have about traveling to the U.S. amid uncertainties and increased tariffs affecting daily life.
