The mastermind behind the award-winning animated movie “KPop Demon Hunters” has been honored with the key to the city of Toronto, her hometown. Maggie Kang, a Korean-Canadian filmmaker, received the key from Mayor Olivia Chow during a panel discussion at the Departure Festival, celebrating the film’s success.
Mayor Chow commended Kang for her achievements and highlighted how her story will serve as an inspiration for future generations. Kang, visibly moved by the recognition, stood alongside the Mayor and Cindy Gouveia, the president of Sheridan College, her alma mater, for commemorative photographs.
Since its debut, “KPop Demon Hunters” has broken records as Netflix’s most-watched film, generating a chart-topping soundtrack and securing approval for a sequel. During the panel, Kang hinted at the upcoming project, expressing her commitment to maintaining the same level of dedication and creating a movie that resonates with her vision.
Later in the week, Kang is set to receive the cultural innovator award at the Departure Honours gala. This recognition further solidifies her impact on the film industry and her contributions to cultural innovation.
