“Hundreds of Hikers Rescued from Mount Everest Blizzard”

Date:

Hundreds of hikers trapped by a blizzard near the eastern side of Mount Everest in Tibet have been successfully rescued by responders, as per reports from Chinese state media. The Himalayas experienced heavy snowfall and rain, leading to the challenging situation. Approximately 350 hikers managed to reach a small town, and communication was established with the remaining 200-plus individuals, as reported by CCTV.

This week, a significant number of tourists visited the remote Karma Valley, which provides access to the eastern Kangshung face of Everest, taking advantage of China’s eight-day National Day holiday. The Karma Valley, known for its lush vegetation and pristine environment, is a unique part of the Everest region compared to the arid north face of the peak. It features untouched alpine forests nourished by meltwaters from the Kangshung glacier at the base of the world’s tallest mountain.

The rescue efforts were highlighted in a video released by Tibetan media, showing hikers receiving warm soup in a communal setting before being transported out of the area by buses. In a separate incident, a South Korean trekker lost his life in Nepal after climbing the 6,476-meter Mera Peak on Saturday. The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association confirmed the rescue of the trekker’s guide.

The sudden change in weather conditions posed challenges for trekkers, especially those near the north face of Everest, which is easily accessible and popular among tourists. Chen Geshuang, part of a trekking team that reached Qudang, described the extreme weather conditions as abnormal for October, with risks of hypothermia due to wet and cold conditions. The team faced heavy snowfall, thunder, and lightning during their descent from the mountains.

Following the rescue efforts, hundreds of local villagers and teams worked to clear snow blocking access to the area where nearly 1,000 people had been stranded. Meanwhile, in Nepal and India, heavy snowfall in the Karma Valley led to adverse conditions, with continuous rain and snowfall affecting visibility and causing challenges for trekkers. Despite the difficulties, many trekkers managed to navigate the situation safely, while tragic incidents were reported, including landslides and fatalities due to extreme weather conditions in the region.
