Lululemon Athletica Inc. has appointed Heidi O’Neill, a former Nike executive, as its new CEO, effective September 8. The Vancouver-based athleisure retailer made this decision following a period of criticism regarding its management and performance.
O’Neill was selected for her extensive experience, track record of implementing successful ideas on a large scale, and her reputation as a catalyst for change and growth. According to Lululemon’s executive board chair Marti Morfitt, O’Neill is known for her leadership skills and ability to envision and execute brand strategies effectively.
This move comes at a challenging time for Lululemon, as it faces stiff competition and shareholder concerns, including those raised by the company’s founder, Chip Wilson. Wilson, although no longer actively involved in the company, advocated for new board members to address market challenges and product innovation.
Following the resignation of former CEO Calvin McDonald in December, the company appointed interim co-CEOs Meghan Frank and André Maestrini until O’Neill assumes her role. O’Neill, credited with contributing to Nike’s significant growth, brings a wealth of experience from her tenure at the athletic brand and other notable companies.
O’Neill expressed her enthusiasm for joining Lululemon, recognizing the brand’s loyal customer base, innovative product ethos, and global growth potential. Industry analysts view O’Neill as a safe and traditional choice, with the potential to drive cultural change and product innovation at Lululemon.
As Lululemon navigates its next chapter under O’Neill’s leadership, the company aims to revitalize its position in the market and reinforce its reputation as a leader in activewear innovation.
