“Halifax Resident Promotes Nesting Boxes for Declining Tree Swallows”

Date:

In an initiative to support tree swallows in finding suitable habitats for breeding, a Halifax resident is advocating for the construction and installation of nesting boxes on residential properties.

Jessica Ryuzaki came up with the idea while exploring the city and noticing the decline in tree numbers. Concerned about the impact on local wildlife, especially birds, she emphasized the importance of providing a safe environment for them.

Tree swallows and other aerial insectivores have experienced a decrease in population in Nova Scotia and P.E.I since the 1970s, as highlighted by the Canadian Breeding Bird Survey. These birds prefer nesting in tree cavities, making nesting boxes a valuable alternative habitat solution.

Building nesting boxes is a simple and affordable process, according to Ryuzaki. Using inexpensive materials like scrap wood, individuals can create these boxes easily. The boxes typically require an entrance hole and a removable side panel for maintenance.

Tony Millard, president of the Nova Scotia Bird Society, endorsed Ryuzaki’s idea and is promoting it on social media platforms. He recommended placing nesting boxes in open, sunny areas about two meters above the ground to protect the birds from ground predators. Additionally, the boxes should face south or east to shield them from strong winds.

The project, now known as ReNest Nova Scotia, is providing templates for crafting the nesting boxes. Millard emphasized that these boxes can benefit various bird species beyond tree swallows and also offer advantages to homeowners by reducing insect populations in their yards.

Winter is suggested as an ideal time for constructing nesting boxes, ensuring they are ready for installation by April before the spring season. Ryuzaki expressed enthusiasm about the community’s interest in participating and looks forward to observing the boxes in yards during spring.

Encouraging everyone in Halifax to set up nesting boxes would be a remarkable achievement, according to Ryuzaki. She hopes for widespread engagement in supporting bird conservation efforts through this initiative.
