“Former RCMP Officer’s Emotional Journey to Approved Insurance Claim”

Date:

A former RCMP officer, Jason Hydamacka, was moved to tears upon learning that his insurance claim for his amputated leg was approved. The leg amputation followed an injury sustained in the line of duty, which had caused him years of chronic pain. Despite facing initial denial from Canada Life due to the timing of the amputation, the insurer eventually reversed its decision after media intervention, issuing two cheques totaling $55,000 to Hydamacka.

Following an incident during a routine traffic stop in 2019 that led to his injury, Hydamacka underwent multiple surgeries over the years before ultimately having his lower right leg amputated in 2025. Initially denied coverage by Canada Life due to the two-year policy limitation, Hydamacka persisted in appealing the decision, which was again rejected before the insurer finally granted his claim.

Advocates, including Aimee Brennan from The War Amps, highlighted the common challenges faced by amputees in obtaining insurance coverage due to strict timelines that may not align with the medical reality of amputation decisions. Hydamacka’s case shed light on the need for better education and understanding from insurance providers regarding such complex and life-altering situations.

Despite the financial strain caused by his early retirement following the accident, Hydamacka expressed gratitude for the support he received during the insurance process. He emphasized the importance of standing up for what is right and expressed his desire to use part of the insurance payout to create memorable experiences for his children.
