Ester Ledecka Chooses Snowboarding Gold Over Alpine Skiing

Date:

Ester Ledecka, an exceptional Czech athlete who made history by winning two gold medals in different sports at a single Winter Olympics, has faced a challenging decision regarding the upcoming Milan-Cortina Games. She has opted to forego the alpine downhill competition in favor of pursuing a third consecutive Olympic gold in snowboarding’s giant slalom due to an unavoidable scheduling clash. Despite her efforts and an unsuccessful appeal to the International Olympic Committee with support from FIS’s Johan Eliasch, conflicting timings have made it impossible for her to compete in both events simultaneously.

Expressing her disappointment, the 30-year-old Ledecka mentioned that she shed a few tears over the situation but acknowledged that the organizing committee faced difficulties in coordinating the program. She emphasized her unique achievement as the only athlete to qualify for two sporting events for the third time and had hoped for special consideration. The final of the snowboarding parallel giant slalom is set for February 8 at 1 p.m. in Livigno, Italy, while the women’s downhill event is scheduled for the same day at 11:30 a.m. in Cortina, with a four-hour drive separating the two venues.

Jiří Kejval, the head of the Czech Olympic Committee, confirmed that the program’s schedule is unlikely to change, expressing regret over the situation but highlighting that they had done their best under the circumstances. Ledecka’s remarkable sporting prowess was evident in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games, where she became the sole female athlete to qualify for both alpine skiing and snowboarding events and clinched gold in the super-G and parallel giant slalom. In the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, she successfully defended her snowboarding title and achieved respectable rankings in other alpine skiing disciplines. At the recent alpine skiing world championships, she secured a bronze in the downhill event.

Looking ahead, Ledecka anticipates participating in the women’s super-G event at the next year’s Olympics, scheduled for February 12. The Czech Republic’s celebrated Olympian has continued to captivate audiences with her exceptional multi-sport success, setting the stage for her upcoming endeavors in the snowboarding arena.
