Epic Games has announced a significant reduction of over 1,000 jobs due to declining engagement with the popular game, Fortnite. This move comes as part of cost-saving measures to address financial challenges faced by the company. CEO Tim Sweeney mentioned that they plan to save $500 million by cutting down on contracting, marketing expenses, and eliminating certain positions.
Despite the resilience shown by blockbuster titles like Fortnite during the pandemic, the overall engagement levels are now decreasing, especially for live-service games that require ongoing costly content updates to retain players. Sweeney acknowledged the difficulties in maintaining Fortnite’s appeal and mentioned that the current market conditions are the most challenging since the company’s inception in 1991.
It is clarified that these job cuts are not related to artificial intelligence concerns within the industry. Earlier this month, Epic Games raised the prices of Fortnite’s in-game currency, citing increased operational costs. This marks the second major layoff round for Epic Games in three years, with a previous one in September 2023 affecting about 16% of the company’s workforce.
While Fortnite continues to lead in monthly active players on gaming consoles, the average playtime has seen a significant decline. The gaming industry as a whole has been impacted, with other companies like Electronic Arts and Amazon also implementing job cuts. Additionally, rising memory chip prices have added to the challenges faced by the industry, as demand from AI data centers has led to increased semiconductor costs and console price hikes.
