“Emera & Canadian Utilities Announce $72B Merger”

Date:

A significant development in the Canadian energy sector took place last year, amid escalating trade tensions with the United States and increased infrastructure projects in Canada. Halifax-based Emera Inc. and Calgary-based Canadian Utilities have unveiled a merger plan to create a new entity valued at $72 billion, positioning it as one of the largest utilities in North America. This strategic move aims to capitalize on the growing demand for power and infrastructure opportunities.

Atco Ltd., the controlling shareholder of Canadian Utilities, is shifting its focus to defense, housing, and infrastructure projects, especially in remote areas. The merger discussions between Emera and Canadian Utilities began 15 months ago when Emera’s CEO, Scott Balfour, and Atco’s CEO, Nancy Southern, recognized the potential for creating a strong Canadian energy company.

The combined company, operating under the Emera brand, will maintain its headquarters in Halifax, with corporate and operational offices in Calgary and Edmonton. The post-merger entity is set to serve six million customers across Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Australia. The newly formed Emera-Canadian Utilities entity plans to invest $32 billion in capital projects by 2030, with a focus on high-growth regions like Florida and Alberta.

Nancy Southern will lead a refocused Atco and co-chair Emera’s board, emphasizing a more entrepreneurial approach to business. The merger will enable Emera to enhance its presence in key markets and further support the growing need for new infrastructure projects.

Shareholders of Emera, Canadian Utilities, and Atco are expected to vote on the merger early next year, subject to regulatory approvals. The deal signifies a strategic alignment in the Canadian energy sector, reflecting the companies’ ambitions to drive growth and competitiveness in the evolving energy landscape.
