Foodtastic, a Montreal-based restaurant operator, is set to introduce Dunkin’ Donuts back to the Canadian market. The company has announced a partnership with Inspire Brands to bring hundreds of Dunkin’ locations to Canada, starting in Toronto and Montreal before expanding to other provinces. The CEO of Foodtastic, Peter Mammas, revealed plans to open the first Dunkin’ store within six months and subsequently launch one store per month.
Dunkin’, known for its coffee, donuts, and breakfast sandwiches, aims to re-establish its presence in Canada after exiting the market in 2018 due to franchisee disputes. Despite Tim Hortons’ dominance with over 4,000 stores in Canada, industry experts believe there is room for Dunkin’ to attract customers. David Soberman, a marketing professor at the University of Toronto, noted that established players like Tim Hortons are more likely to withstand new competition, while smaller chains may face challenges.
Robert Carter, president of the Coffee Association of Canada, emphasized the potential for growth in the Canadian coffee market, citing similarities between American and Canadian consumer preferences. Mammas expressed confidence in Canadians embracing Dunkin’ as a new coffee option, highlighting that the Canadian franchisees will operate the Dunkin’ outlets.
While some loyal Tim Hortons customers expressed their allegiance to the brand, others like Jay Antflick, a Toronto-based flight attendant, eagerly anticipate Dunkin’s return, reminiscing about his experiences with the brand in the United States. Antflick, who frequents Dunkin’ during his travels, plans to be among the first customers at the new Dunkin’ locations in Canada.
