On a cloudy day in mid-October, the inclement weather acted as one of the few defenses against the relentless drones flying overhead as Russia aims to conquer the few remaining cities in the region it does not yet control. Viktoriya Sergeeva, a 45-year-old who manages one of the city’s last supermarkets, shared her tragic story of losing both parents in a recent bombing in Pokrovsk before seeking refuge in Dobropillia.
The town’s population has dwindled drastically, with estimates putting it at less than 1,500 residents, down from 28,000 in 2022 before the Russian invasion. Russian soldiers, often operating in small groups, now patrol the streets, infiltrating Ukrainian lines and blurring the distinction between friend and foe in a transformed battlefield.
Dobropillia, along with Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, currently stands as one of the most intense fronts in the ongoing conflict, with Russia pushing to seize the area while Ukrainian forces, including a top infantry brigade, defend fiercely. The traditional front line has dissolved into a chaotic “front zone,” where both sides’ forces intermingle in scattered groups, making it challenging to discern clear boundaries.
The shift in tactics is evident, with Russia transitioning from massed armor and artillery assaults to deploying infantry supported by drones to penetrate Ukrainian defenses. The widespread use of drones has forced Ukrainian units to operate in smaller groups to avoid detection, complicating resupply efforts and necessitating constant vigilance against aerial threats.
Efforts to counter the drone menace are ongoing, with commanders like Vova emphasizing the importance of visual surveillance using drones to identify and neutralize enemy threats. Despite the technological advancements and strategic adjustments, the human cost of the conflict remains staggering, with high casualty rates among both Ukrainian and Russian forces.
