“Cumberland Municipality Enacts Moratorium on AI Data Centers”

Date:

The Cumberland Municipality has taken steps to implement a temporary halt on the establishment of data centers specializing in artificial intelligence (AI). During a recent council meeting, the initial approval for a six-month moratorium on data center development permit applications was granted unanimously.

Concerns raised by residents, particularly regarding the potential impact of water and electricity consumption by data centers on both the community and the environment, prompted the decision. Councilor Jennifer Houghtaling emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation before making any decisions, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the local environment.

Mayor Rod Gilroy expressed the municipality’s proactive approach to addressing the issue, stating that taking no action was not an option. The move to enact the moratorium aligns Cumberland with similar measures taken by other jurisdictions, such as Oakville, Ontario.

The council’s decision was influenced by public unease following the purchase of farmland in Malagash by a Mississauga-based company, 3Sha Infotech Inc. Council members were informed that no inquiries or applications related to data centers had been received, prompting the proactive implementation of the moratorium.

Local resident Kate Dunn supported the moratorium, citing concerns about the potential disruption to rural life in Cumberland County. She emphasized the need for careful consideration of the implications of AI data centers on the community.

As debates surrounding AI data centers continue to intensify across North America, public sentiment remains divided. Recent polling data revealed significant opposition to the construction of large AI data centers in residential areas. Calls for stringent government regulations on AI technologies were also prevalent among respondents.

The municipality plans to schedule a public hearing in September following the first reading of the bylaw. The eventual drafting of regulations will be crucial in shaping the future landscape of data center development within the region.
