“Conservationists Challenge Calls to Resume Grizzly Bear Hunting”

Date:

Conservation groups are opposing recent calls for the Alberta government to reinstate grizzly bear hunting after two decades, citing a lack of scientific justification. The Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) passed a resolution urging the government to implement a regulated grizzly bear hunt, but conservationists emphasize the importance of a science-based approach to grizzly bear management. The Alberta Wildlife Federation supports a limited harvest of grizzly bears if it aligns with a comprehensive management plan based on scientific evidence.

The push for a grizzly bear hunt by RMA follows concerns about increased human-bear interactions in southwestern Alberta, where a fisherman was injured by a grizzly bear with cubs near Cardston last summer. The lack of recent population studies on grizzly bears raises doubts about the necessity of a hunt, with conservationists calling for updated data to inform management decisions.

The Alberta government’s management approach prioritizes public safety, conflict reduction, and sustainable grizzly bear populations. Although acknowledging the risks posed by grizzly bears, conservationists stress the need for more transparency and evidence to support the resumption of hunting. Grizzly bears are designated as a threatened species in Alberta, with hunting banned since 2006 except for Indigenous subsistence purposes.

Efforts to address human-wildlife conflicts and mitigate risks have been proposed, including increased funding for research, conflict prevention, and community safety initiatives. Despite financial constraints hindering recent population studies, experts emphasize the importance of ongoing monitoring to inform effective management strategies. Collaborative initiatives, such as DNA research using grizzly bear hair, are suggested as cost-effective alternatives to gather essential data for informed decision-making.
