“Competition Heats Up for Canada’s No. 1 Goalkeeper”

Date:

Maxime Crepeau is embracing the competition as Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch deliberates on who will be the nation’s top goalkeeper. Returning to his roots holds special significance for Crepeau as the Canadian men’s team, ranked No. 26, prepares to face No. 25 Australia in a friendly match at Stade Saputo in Montreal. Following this, they will take on Colombia in Harrison, N.J., to wrap up the October FIFA international window.

Speaking at CF Montreal’s training facility, Crepeau, a 31-year-old native of Candiac, Que., expressed his sentimental attachment to the place where he grew up and developed as a player. Having played a supporting role behind Milan Borjan for a considerable period, Crepeau now finds himself in a fierce competition with Dayne St. Clair for the starting goalkeeper position leading up to the 2026 World Cup.

While Marsch has not confirmed the starting goalkeeper for the upcoming matches, he indicated that both Crepeau and St. Clair will each have an opportunity to showcase their skills. The decision on the No. 1 goalkeeper is expected to be made soon, with the chosen player likely to receive a series of games prior to the World Cup.

Crepeau acknowledged the high stakes involved and emphasized the importance of performance in securing a spot on the national team. The competition between him and St. Clair has been intense, reflecting the depth and quality of the team’s roster across various positions.

Looking ahead to the World Cup, Crepeau is determined to make his mark after missing out on the previous tournament due to injury. With Marsch focusing primarily on Crepeau and St. Clair as the main contenders for the goalkeeper position, both players are eager to demonstrate their abilities on the field.

The return of the Canadian men’s team to Montreal holds significant sentimental value, with Crepeau reminiscing about his early days at the Montreal Impact academy. The presence of several Quebec-born players, including Crepeau, highlights the growth of soccer talent in the region.

As the team gears up for upcoming fixtures, fans can anticipate more opportunities to see the Canadian men’s team in action, with a final camp and exhibition match scheduled before the World Cup in June.
