“Carney Urges Swift Implementation of Israel-Hamas Peace Deal”

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged a prompt implementation of the initial phase of the peace agreement proposed by the United States between Israel and Hamas, following the recent announcement of a deal late on Wednesday. The agreement entails Hamas releasing all remaining Israeli hostages and Israel withdrawing its troops “to an agreed upon line,” according to U.S. President Donald Trump. Carney commended Trump, along with representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, for their roles in achieving this milestone.

Expressing relief that the hostages will soon be reunited with their families, Carney emphasized the significance of reaching a point where peace seems achievable after years of hardship. He called upon all parties involved to swiftly adhere to the agreed terms and strive for a just and enduring peace. If implemented, this deal would mark a significant step towards resolving a conflict that has escalated into a broader regional crisis.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also extended his congratulations to President Trump for what he described as a groundbreaking achievement towards long-lasting peace. Poilievre expressed hope for the safe return of all hostages and an end to the violence, enabling all to prosper in a sustainable peace environment.

In earlier statements on Wednesday, Carney mentioned his recent communications with key figures involved in Trump’s peace initiative. He disclosed having discussions with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, within the last 48 hours to coordinate support for the peace plan’s progression. Carney emphasized Canada’s collaboration with Gulf and Arab powers in alignment with the U.S. administration’s 20-point peace strategy.

Trump’s proposed plan includes provisions for a ceasefire, an exchange of hostages between Hamas and Israel, a phased Israeli retreat from the Palestinian territory, Hamas disarmament, and the establishment of an interim government overseen by an international body. Blair is expected to be part of the envisioned “peace board” overseeing the ceasefire implementation, while Kushner plays a crucial role as one of Trump’s envoys in the peace talks.

Despite the recent announcement of progress in the initial phase of the agreement, uncertainties remain regarding the future governance of Gaza post-conflict. Various stakeholders have differing views on the governance structure, with Hamas advocating for a technocrat government supervised by the Palestinian Authority, opposed to foreign intervention. Arab nations supporting the plan emphasize the eventual independence of a Palestinian state, a notion rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Meanwhile, Israel has conducted military operations in Gaza, causing widespread destruction. Although Israel has reduced its military activities following Trump’s intervention, strikes have not ceased entirely. Gaza officials report significant casualties since the conflict began, with many lives lost and hostages taken. Israeli authorities confirm some hostages remain in captivity, with efforts ongoing for their safe release.
