“Canadian Teens Create Board Game Satirizing Trump”

Date:

In a display of unconventional behavior, U.S. President Donald Trump has once again captured attention, this time by suggesting Canada should become the 51st state, engaging in unpredictable press briefings with global leaders, and testing the boundaries of his presidential authority. Since the start of his second term in January, Trump’s actions have sparked criticism from Canadians but have also inspired a group of teenagers from London, Ont., who have developed a new board game.

The teenagers behind the creation of “American Dictator” are motivated by a desire to revitalize the world of board games. Adam Palma, a 15-year-old creator, emphasized the importance of shedding light on Trump’s actions and standing up against his unfavorable treatment of Canada. The game satirizes what the group perceives as Trump’s controversial decisions and conduct, such as proposing to rename bodies of water, introducing a tax and spending-focused bill, and being embroiled in high-profile legal battles.

The objective of playing “American Dictator” is to acquire and control American cities for the construction of golf courses, resorts, or towers. The game, reminiscent of Monopoly, features unique spaces where players can imprison opponents in a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility, manipulate game rules with a Supreme Court justice, or visit a casino for financial gains. Players must navigate through a deck of decision cards reflecting Trump’s questionable choices and pay penalties to others.

The game reflects the trend of Canadians boycotting travel to the U.S., with one card causing a player’s hotel to go bankrupt due to the decline in Canadian visitors. “American Dictator,” created by teenagers, has already seen 25 copies sold in its initial week. Ben Whitmill, one of the game’s developers, highlighted the humor in the game’s depiction of Trump’s decisions and the opportunity to raise awareness through a board game format.

The teenagers conceived the game during a weekend at Grand Bend, prompted by a lack of internet access. Their aim is to use “American Dictator” as a tool to educate youth about politics and foster discussions on current events in a lighthearted manner. Kiara Palma, aged 17, expressed optimism about the game’s potential to convey important messages and make a positive impact on society.

With 25 units sold since its recent launch at $50 per game, “American Dictator” is yet to attract American buyers. The group plans to develop additional geopolitical games, including a version of Cards Against Humanity titled Cards Against Democracy. The project is backed by family funding and offers merchandise like T-shirts and mugs for purchase online.

The creators of “American Dictator” are eager for President Trump to experience the game and are curious about his reaction. Their aspiration is for players to recognize the importance of standing up for justice and defending their country amidst challenges and adversity.
