“Canadian Swimmers Shine with Multiple Podium Finishes”

Date:

Reid Maxwell secured a silver medal in his inaugural world-championship event, while Canadian swimmers Danielle Dorris and Mary Jibb each earned their third podium finishes at the world Para swimming championships on Friday. Maxwell clinched the silver in the men’s S8 200-meter individual medley, setting a new Canadian record with a time of 2:26.72.

Australia’s Callum Simpson claimed gold in 2:25.49, with Greece’s Dimosthenis Michalentzakis taking the bronze in 2:27.24. Maxwell, an 18-year-old from St. Albert, Alberta, made an impressive world championship debut after winning silver in the men’s 400 freestyle at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Reflecting on his unexpected success, Maxwell expressed surprise at his medal and time, becoming the first Canadian male to secure a world championships medal in an S8 event. Dorris followed with a bronze in the women’s S7 50 freestyle, while Jibb finished third in the women’s S9 100 backstroke.

Dorris clocked a season-best 33.67 seconds, narrowly beating Britain’s Iona Winnifrith. Jibb, on the other hand, achieved her fifth personal best of the week, earning bronze in the women’s 100 backstroke with a time of 1:10.63.

Jibb, aged 18 from Muskoka, Ontario, has now accumulated a gold and two bronze medals in her world-championship debut. She joins the ranks as the youngest Canadian swimmer to secure at least three medals in a single world championships since 2013.

Canada’s impressive performance continued with a total of 11 medals (two gold, two silver, seven bronze) as they head into the final day of competition at the para swimming worlds.
