A recent survey conducted by Environics Institute revealed a significant increase in the number of Canadians expressing concerns about the volume of immigrants being admitted by the federal government. Notably, Conservative voters have shown a particularly sharp shift in their views, with a doubling in the percentage of those who believe there are too many immigrants entering the country over the past five years.
The survey highlighted that 82% of Conservative voters now feel there is an excessive influx of immigrants, a substantial rise from 41% in 2020. This figure surpasses the overall Canadian sentiment, which stands at 56% expressing similar concerns about the volume of immigrants entering the country.
Keith Neuman from Environics noted a notable shift in public opinion on immigration post-pandemic, attributing the declining support to the significant increase in newcomers facilitated by the previous Liberal government. This influx has strained various sectors, including housing and healthcare, leading to heightened dissatisfaction among Canadians, particularly Conservative supporters.
While there has been a slight increase in Liberal and NDP voters expressing reservations about the government’s immigration policies post-COVID, the divide among political parties regarding immigration has widened significantly over the years. The survey results indicated that frustration with the government’s management of immigration issues and concerns about the economic and housing impacts of increased immigration were key factors driving the negative sentiment.
Neuman clarified that the opposition to high immigration levels is not rooted in racial bias or xenophobia, with only a small minority of respondents attributing their stance to concerns about Canadian culture. The survey also found little disparity in opinions between first-generation Canadians and those born in the country.
The survey findings align with similar trends identified by Nanos Research and Abacus Data, indicating a substantial shift in public opinion towards immigration. Former Conservative immigration minister Jason Kenney highlighted the need to address public concerns by reducing immigration numbers and improving the integrity of the immigration system.
The Conservative Party, under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre, has proposed stricter immigration policies, including setting hard caps on newcomers, ending the Temporary Foreign Worker program, and cracking down on fraudulent refugee claimants. Prime Minister Mark Carney has acknowledged the need for a more focused approach to immigration, emphasizing the importance of sustainable immigration levels.
Political analysts suggest that the Conservative Party’s renewed focus on immigration policies reflects a response to changing public sentiments, with a cautious approach aimed at addressing concerns without alienating support from immigrant communities. The party’s evolving stance on immigration is seen as a strategic balancing act to appeal to a broader voter base while addressing growing public apprehensions on the issue.
