Astronaut Jeremy Hansen, who completed a lunar journey in April, has decided to retire from the astronaut corps at the Canadian Space Agency. The agency officially disclosed Hansen’s departure in a press release issued this afternoon.
In the announcement, it was stated that the government of Canada acknowledges the remarkable contributions of Canadian Space Agency astronaut Colonel Jeremy Hansen to Canada’s space program. Hansen plans to explore new career opportunities starting in September 2026 while also maintaining a role as a reservist with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Hansen, alongside NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, participated in a mission around the moon known as Artemis II in April. Hansen personally announced his retirement from the Canadian Space Agency on social media.
Reflecting on his time with the CSA, Hansen expressed gratitude for the 32 years of military service and 17 years as an astronaut, culminating in the memorable experience of orbiting the moon during Artemis II. He emphasized that his dedication to advancing Canada’s prosperity remains unwavering.
Throughout his career, Hansen underwent rigorous training, worked at NASA mission control, and prepared extensively for the Artemis II mission. Following the mission, he shared with CBC News that the visual and physical aspects of space travel were awe-inspiring, but the profound human experience stood out the most for him.
Minister Melanie Joly praised Hansen’s historic achievement as the first Canadian to join a lunar mission, inspiring generations of Canadians. She highlighted his exceptional accomplishments in advancing Canada’s presence in space exploration and motivating young Canadians to pursue their ambitions.
After Hansen’s retirement, the Canadian Space Agency will have three active astronauts: David Saint-Jacques, Joshua Kutryk, and Jenni Gibbons. Gibbons, who contributed to mission control during Artemis II, continues to play a crucial role at NASA. Kutryk is set to embark on a mission to the International Space Station in September as part of Crew-13.
In his farewell message, Hansen expressed gratitude to the Canadian Armed Forces, the CSA, NASA, international partners, and his family, thanking all Canadians for their support in aiming high for the country’s achievements.
