Canada Post Suspends Mail to EU Amid New Customs Rules

Date:

Canada Post has announced the suspension of services to certain European Union countries due to new customs regulations for low-value shipments. According to a recent notice on its website, the postal service is currently not accepting parcels bound for twelve countries until further notice. The affected countries include Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Spain. However, shipments to other EU destinations where Delivered Duties Unpaid is possible, such as Poland, Latvia, and Sweden, will continue to be accepted.

In response to the European Union’s implementation of a three-euro customs duty on parcels valued at 150 euros or less, Canada Post is taking these measures. The EU justified this new duty by stating that the previous duty-free rule for low-value packages was outdated and often exploited, with billions of such items entering the EU annually. The EU aims to level the playing field for businesses within the bloc and enhance consumer protection by implementing these new customs rules.

The European Union has clarified that the new duty is temporary, with a more comprehensive tax system based on product value, origin, and classification set to be in place by July 1, 2028. This move follows a similar action by the United States, which eliminated its long-standing de minimis exemption last year, citing concerns over the unchecked flow of low-value packages into the country. Canada also maintains its own exemption for low-value shipments from Mexico and the U.S. valued at $150 or less.

These changes in customs regulations are aimed at creating fair competition, protecting consumers, combating customs fraud, and addressing environmental issues related to mass shipping. Businesses and consumers impacted by these alterations in customs duties will need to adapt to the new regulations set forth by the European Union and other jurisdictions worldwide.
