Britney Spears was taken into custody in Southern California on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, as confirmed by state and local authorities. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stopped Spears on Wednesday evening for allegedly speeding and exhibiting erratic driving behavior while behind the wheel of a black BMW. Following field sobriety tests, the pop singer was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of a mix of substances, including alcohol.
Subsequently, Spears was processed at a detention facility around 3 a.m. on Thursday and was released at approximately 6 a.m., as stated by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. The CHP disclosed that the matter remains under investigation, with pending results from chemical tests. A court appearance has been scheduled for May 4.
Originally hailing from Mississippi and brought up in Louisiana, Spears, recognized as a teenage pop sensation, emerged as an influential figure in the music scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Her journey from Disney Channel’s “The Mickey Mouse Club” to MTV and beyond was marked by hit songs like “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” “Oops! I Did It Again,” and “Toxic.”
During the 2000s, the star grappled with mental health challenges and substance abuse, leading to a period of hospitalization in 2008. In recent times, public attention has been focused on the conservatorship overseen by her father, James Spears, governing her personal and financial affairs. This scrutiny gave rise to the “Free Britney” movement and a documentary shedding light on her legal battle with her father.
In a significant development in 2021, a judge terminated the conservatorship, marking a pivotal victory for the renowned pop artist.
