A recall has been issued for a blood pressure medication due to a potential mix-up resulting in incorrect drug packaging. Health Canada announced that Marcan Pharmaceuticals Inc. is recalling two lots of MAR-Amlodipine 5 milligram tablets, commonly used to manage high blood pressure and chest pain. The concern arises from the possibility of certain bottles containing 2.5 milligram tablets of midodrine, a medication prescribed for low blood pressure treatment.
Patients are advised to inspect their medication to ensure they have received the correct drug. The MAR-Amlodipine 5 milligram tablets are described as white or off-white, flat, eight-sided pills with the numbers 210 and 5 imprinted on one side and a dividing line in the middle. In contrast, the midodrine 2.5 milligram tablets are round, white, labeled with ‘M2’ on one side, and marked with a line across the center on the other side.
Health Canada emphasizes that individuals who find round tablets in their bottle should return them to the pharmacy for a proper replacement. Substituting amlodipine with midodrine can result in severe side effects, including a dangerous surge in blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, and potential organ damage, as stated in the public advisory.
Patients experiencing dizziness, abnormally high blood pressure, or slow heartbeats are urged to contact a healthcare provider or call emergency services. Immediate medical attention is advised for individuals encountering chest pain, sudden headaches, speech difficulties, or loss of sensation or movement in any part of their body, according to Health Canada’s guidance.
