“Backlash Erupts Over Trump-Kennedy Center Renaming”

Date:

The White House announced on Thursday that the board handpicked by U.S. President Donald Trump has voted to change the name of Washington’s primary performing arts center to the Trump-Kennedy Center. This decision has sparked backlash from Democrats, who argue that the board has exceeded its legal authority, as the center was originally named after President John F. Kennedy by Congress in 1964 following his assassination.

Former Senate historian Donald A. Ritchie noted that since Congress initially named the center, any formal renaming would require congressional approval to “amend the law.” Despite this, the board proceeded to immediately update its website with the new name without waiting for further legislative action.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized the necessity of legislative involvement in the renaming process, stating that action from Congress is essential. The board of trustees unanimously voted to rebrand the institution as the Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, according to Roma Daravi, the center’s public relations vice president.

Daravi highlighted that the renaming decision acknowledges Trump’s alleged efforts to rescue the center from financial troubles and physical deterioration, a claim disputed by the center’s former leadership. She emphasized that the new Trump Kennedy Center symbolizes bipartisan support for the preservation of American cultural heritage.

Following the announcement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt praised Trump’s contributions to the center since his return to office in January. Trump, who chairs the board, expressed surprise and gratitude for the renaming decision, commending the distinguished individuals on the board.

There were previous hints of a possible renaming, with Trump informally referring to the center as the “Trump Kennedy Center” on various occasions. The Kennedy family members, including Maria Shriver and Tim Shriver, voiced strong opposition to the renaming, calling it an insult to President Kennedy’s legacy.

In addition to the renaming controversy, Trump’s involvement in the center has been marked by renovation projects and changes in programming. He secured over $250 million from Congress for renovations, including upgrades to the building and theaters. Despite these efforts, the center has faced challenges, with declining subscription sales and canceled performances impacting its operations.

The renaming of the center reflects Trump’s increased involvement in its management and programming since his return to office, raising concerns and objections from various stakeholders, including members of the Kennedy family.
