“Air Canada Suspends U.S. Routes Early Amid Jet Fuel Cost Surge”

Date:

Air Canada has made the decision to suspend service on four seasonal routes to U.S. destinations earlier than planned due to the high cost of jet fuel. The affected routes and their last flight dates are as follows: Toronto to Sacramento (last flight on Aug. 1), Vancouver to Raleigh (last flight on July 29), Toronto to Charleston (last flight on Sept. 6), and Montreal to Austin (last flight on Sept. 7).

Air Canada intends to fully resume service on these routes in the summer of 2027. The airline has assured affected passengers that they will be provided with alternative travel options or eligible for a refund.

Global airlines have started reducing flights in response to the escalating conflict in Iran and the resulting oil blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to a more than twofold increase in jet fuel prices. Air Canada had previously announced the suspension of six routes deemed economically unviable.

In line with the industry trend, WestJet has also announced a reduction in flight capacity for April, May, and June by consolidating flights and adjusting the travel duration for seasonal services. The jet fuel scarcity has resulted in air carriers like Air Canada, WestJet, Porter Airlines, and Air Transat planning fare increases or surcharges to mitigate the impact of rising costs.
