“Kiss Guitarist Ace Frehley Dies at 74”

Date:

Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and founding member of the glam rock band Kiss, passed away on Thursday at the age of 74. Frehley died peacefully in Morristown, N.J., surrounded by his family after a recent fall, as confirmed by his agent.

In a statement, family members expressed their devastation and heartbreak over Frehley’s passing. They highlighted his laughter and kindness, which they will always cherish and celebrate.

Kiss, known for hits like “Rock and Roll All Nite” and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You,” was famous for their theatrical stage performances featuring fireworks, smoking instruments, and band members in elaborate costumes with black-and-white face paint.

The original Kiss lineup included Frehley, singer-guitarist Paul Stanley, bassist Gene Simmons, and drummer Peter Criss. Each member adopted comic book-style personas, with Frehley known as “Space Ace” and the “Spaceman.” Renowned for his use of pyrotechnics, Frehley’s guitars would glow, emit smoke, and shoot rockets during performances.

Simmons and Stanley expressed their deep sorrow at Frehley’s passing, acknowledging his significant role in the band’s history and legacy. Kiss, along with Frehley and his bandmates, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

Kiss achieved immense popularity in the mid-1970s, selling millions of albums and licensing their iconic image for various products. Their biggest commercial hit, “Beth,” reached No. 7 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1976.

In 2024, the band sold their catalog, brand name, and intellectual property to Pophouse Entertainment Group for over $300 million US.

Born Paul Daniel Frehley, he started playing guitar at 13 and played in local bands before joining Kiss. After leaving the band in 1982, Frehley pursued a solo career and formed Frehley’s Comet. He later rejoined Kiss for a successful reunion before departing again in 2002.

Following Frehley’s passing, musicians like Tom Morello and Mike McCready paid tribute to him, highlighting his rock ‘n’ roll spirit and infectious laugh. Rush remembered him for his unique character and authentic rock star presence.

Guitarist Steve Vai described Frehley as the epitome of rock ‘n’ roll attitude, praising his stage presence and musical prowess. Kiss is set to receive another accolade later this year as one of the artists honored by the Kennedy Center.
