“Sandwich Town Navigates Uncertain Future Amid Bridge Development”

Date:

Sandwich Town, situated between North America’s busiest border crossing and a forthcoming international bridge, is at a crossroads with uncertain changes ahead. Despite the challenges, residents are optimistic about the potential for growth and economic rejuvenation in the area.

Krystal Lynn Ouellette, a long-time resident of Sandwich, expressed her hope that the new bridge will attract more visitors and investment to the neighborhood. Over the years, she has witnessed the transformation of the historic community into a neglected area with numerous abandoned properties, giving it a downtrodden appearance.

Concerns have been raised by residents, including Ouellette, about the lack of essential services such as grocery stores, post offices, and other basic amenities in Sandwich. The ongoing construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge since 2018 is seen as a pivotal moment that could spark positive changes in the area.

Ouellette and other locals interviewed by CBC are looking forward to potential developments like additional community centers, a variety of shops, and improved infrastructure to accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic once the bridge is operational. However, challenges remain, as the current state of roads and traffic management in Sandwich may not be adequately prepared for the influx of visitors.

Tyler Dwayne McMenemy, who purchased a home near the new bridge, believes that the project will lead to economic revitalization and increased property values in Sandwich. He emphasized the importance of enhancing the neighborhood’s appearance and infrastructure to make a positive first impression on visitors using the bridge.

The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, overseeing the bridge project, has allocated a $23 million fund for community projects benefiting both Windsor and Detroit. Positive impacts are already visible in the redevelopment of Sandwich Street, with improvements including new stormwater sewers, sidewalks, and cycling lanes.

While the exact opening date of the Gordie Howe International Bridge is yet to be determined, the ongoing efforts to enhance Sandwich Town and its surroundings are expected to create a vibrant and welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike. The bridge is seen as a symbol of hope for the community’s future growth and prosperity.
