Transport Canada initiated a thorough defect investigation on a Lion-manufactured school bus model after a series of incidents, including fires and smoke-filled buses. The probe commenced following a recent fire in Montreal, where a bus carrying five children and a driver caught fire, with all occupants escaping unharmed. This incident led Quebec to suspend the service of 1,200 Lion school buses for precautionary inspections.
Prior to this, there were three other incidents involving the same model, dating back to November 2024, but a formal defect investigation was only launched after the Montreal fire. Transport Canada was previously aware of these incidents but did not take action until now.
The defect investigation involves ongoing vehicle inspections, collaboration with the manufacturer, and data analysis. Despite the manufacturer’s knowledge of the previous incidents, they have not disclosed the actions taken. Fleet operators with LionC buses are urged to conduct immediate inspections, and bus drivers are advised on safety protocols in case of smoke or burning smells.
Transport Canada stated that they look into public complaints related to vehicle safety issues, and a defect investigation is initiated if a potential trend is identified. The incidents are believed to originate from the heating and ventilation system, prompting the formal investigation. The Transport Minister emphasized the manufacturers’ duty to report safety defects promptly and act urgently in ensuring public safety.
