“Hamas Returns 10th Hostage Body, Pushes for Aid Access in Gaza”

Date:

Israel has confirmed the identity of another hostage’s remains handed over by Hamas as Eliyahu Margalit. The Palestinian militant group is continuing efforts to recover more bodies in the Gaza Strip and is calling for increased aid access into the region.

Margalit, who was 76 years old, was abducted during a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, from the horse stables at Kibbutz Nir Oz. This marks the 10th returned hostage body since the recent ceasefire took effect over a week ago. Following a warning from U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened to allow Israel to resume hostilities if Hamas does not fulfill its end of the agreement by returning all 28 hostages’ bodies, efforts to locate the remaining remains are underway.

The hostage forum supporting abducted individuals’ families expressed relief at Margalit’s return but emphasized that their mission continues until all 18 remaining hostages are brought home. The forum announced plans to persist in holding weekly rallies until all the bodies are recovered.

As part of the ceasefire terms, the handover of hostages’ remains has been a major point of contention, along with aid distribution, border crossing openings into Gaza, and reconstruction efforts. Both the Israeli military and Shin Bet security service emphasized Hamas’ obligation to adhere to the agreement and ensure the return of all deceased hostages.

Hamas cited challenges in retrieving some hostages’ remains due to the destruction of tunnels and buildings by Israel during the conflict, claiming that heavy machinery is needed to excavate the rubble. The shortage of equipment in Gaza, caused by the conflict initiated in 2023, has hindered these recovery efforts.

While the focus remains on the return of hostages’ remains, Hamas is advocating for increased aid flow, expedited border crossing operations, and reconstruction initiatives with the help of mediators. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has underscored Israel’s firm stance on Hamas meeting the ceasefire terms regarding the repatriation of hostages’ bodies.
